To make an informed decision about aged care, it’s important to know that there is financial help available. Home Care Packages are one of the ways the government provides funding for older Australians to access affordable aged care.

What is a Home Care Package?

Home Care Packages are funded by the government and used for aged care services. These aged care services include those for your wellbeing, such as personal care or nursing. It also includes services to keep you safe in your own home, such as cleaning and home maintenance. Services that keep you connected with your community, such as social support and transport, are also included.

Who can receive a Home Care Package?

There is no minimum age requirement to be eligible for a Home Care Package. You may be a younger person who has specific care needs that are not being met through other specialised services.  To receive a Home Care Package, your care needs and circumstances will be reviewed at a face-to-face assessment. How does it work?

There are four levels of Home Care Packages available. Level 1 is for people who require a basic level of care and support. Level 4 is for those whose needs are more complex, and they require a high level of care. The government also offers a Commonwealth Home Support Programme, often referred to as a CHSP. This is for people who want to remain living at home as they age. It provides entry-level support to help people maintain their independence.

Once you have your home care package, you can choose a care provider. It’s a good idea to work together to identify which services will best meet your needs. Your care provider can manage your services for you on your behalf.

Is there short-term care available?

If you’ve had a recent hospital stay, there is help available to support your recovery. This type of care is called ‘transition care’. Services available for transition care include therapy services, nursing support, and home help. You can access transition care for up to 12 weeks per year. What costs are involved?

Costs may vary from person to person. While the Australian Government contributes to the cost of your aged care services, you may also be asked to contribute – if you can afford to. You may have to pay a basic daily fee and a care fee. This will be determined with an income assessment.
