4 Tips to Keep You Social
Regular social connection can keep you mentally and emotionally happy and may even lead to a longer life! But as we age, connection can take a bit of extra effort—our social circles may dwindle, and putting ourselves out there can feel a little strange. So, here are four easy tips to help keep you social as you age.
1. Keep it Close
You don’t need to travel very far to meet new people or create meaningful social connections. In fact, it’s often better to make friends close to home—the closer you are, the easier it will be to visit! So, if you’re keen to make a new friend in your local community, start by considering what’s close by. Think cafes, shopping centres, local parks, or anywhere else where you could bump into a new friend. Then, get out there! Visit these places regularly and strike up a few conversations; you never know who you might meet.
It can be challenging to get out and about as we age, so if you could use some assistance getting to and from your local café, or if you’d like some company while you explore, we can help. Click here to learn more about our transport and support at home.
2. Consider a Club or Class
What’s the best way to make a new friend? Chat about a shared interest! And the easiest way to find people with shared interests is by joining a club or class. Whether you’re into gardening, crafting, sports, cooking, reading, or anything for that matter, there’s a club to suit. If you’re unsure where to start, jumping on your local council’s website is always a good bet—they often host meetups or community groups to help locals stay connected. Many councils even offer groups for people with lower mobility or disability. Plus, even if you don’t meet a new friend the first, second, or third time you attend, you’ll still connect with your community while doing something you love; it’s a win-win!
3. Socialise with Social Media
If you live with lower mobility and find it a bit more difficult to leave home, consider connecting over the internet! More often than not, social media platforms are completely free and offer a wonderful way to connect with the people you care about. You can chat, video call, share photos, and more, with just the touch of a button. And if you’re not confident with technology, that’s okay. Try asking a friend, family member, or in home care worker to help you set things up. Most platforms are very intuitive and don’t take much getting used to.
Just remember to keep an eye out for scams online. If something seems strange, ask a family member for their opinion, and never send money to someone over the internet.
4. Pick a Pet
If you’re looking for a best friend, consider a friend of the animal variety. Pets make excellent companions, combating loneliness and increasing happiness and contentment. Plus, you’ll never have to go back and forth to plan a catch-up—they’ll be there for you 24 hours a day! Pets come in all shapes and sizes. Keen for a cuddle? A cat could be a great pick. Want a loyal and intelligent companion? Consider a precious pup. Just be sure to thoroughly research your pet’s needs before adopting. If you’re not sure whether you can provide your new pet the care and love they deserve, why not enlist some support? Many in home care providers offer pet sitting, pet care, and dog walking services—the more you know!
