Top 3 Summer Outdoor Activities
Spending time outside in the fresh air and sunshine is good for all of us. It has been shown to boost our mood, improve self-esteem, and even reduce depression and anxiety. Not to mention the physical health benefits of spending time in nature too. Whilst participating in outdoor activities may be a bit difficult for some of us, there are a few activities most of us should be able to enjoy this summer, with a helping hand if needed.
Walking
The health benefits of walking shouldn’t be underestimated. It can help reduce pain from conditions such as arthritis, improve heart health, lower blood sugar levels, and reduce anxiety. Walking is one of the best ways to keep fit, and even just 20 minutes a day can show the benefits. But aside from keeping us healthy, walking is one of the best ways to spend time outdoors, catching up with friends, taking in the surroundings, and appreciating nature. If you need someone to accompany you, or assist with mobility, we can help.
Swimming
Swimming is another great way to enjoy the fresh air and sun this summer. It’s low-impact, which means it’s easy on your joints, and again, is beneficial for people with arthritis. Swimming has also been found to help increase bone density, while the water itself can have a calming effect on your mood and stress levels. Swimming in therapy pools has even more benefits. It can help relieve chronic pain, and improve blood circulation. There are many pools around now which offer swimming classes for people with disability too. As well as one on one sessions. It’s something well worth looking into.
Picnics
You don’t always have to be exercising to enjoy the beautiful summer weather! Picnics are a great way to get out and about, socialise, and enjoy the sunshine. Just make sure to always wear sunscreen, a hat, sun-smart clothing, and choose a spot where you can enjoy the shade also. If you need some support with these kinds of activities, we can provide social support and companionship, too.
Be Sun Smart
There’s no denying we’ve got to be extra careful here in the Australian sun and sweltering heat over summer. Make sure whatever you’re doing, you are protected from the sun, have plenty of water, and have healthy snacks to keep your energy levels from dropping too much. If you’re going on a walk, it’s a good idea to head out earlier in the day to avoid the hottest sun.
