Simply Helping David to Live Independently
Have you ever wondered what it takes to achieve true independence?
For David, that journey began with support from Simply Helping Central and Northern Melbourne, and we would like to acknowledge and celebrate David for reaching such a significant milestone.
Recognised as a ‘younger person in aged care with a disability’, David lives with an acquired brain injury and a psychosocial disability that have affected his cognitive abilities and independence. In 2004, he moved into an aged care home in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, where he spent the next 20 years with daily access to formal supports. However, in 2022, David made a courageous decision. He engaged Simply Helping Central and Northern Melbourne through the NDIS, seeking our support to overcome barriers and build the skills necessary for independent living.
David has since benefitted from a dedicated team of support workers focused on enhancing his capacity for daily living activities such as cooking, shopping, budgeting, job searching, and community engagement. With the partnership of his Support Coordinator at Breakthru and his Residential Aged Care Service Coordinator at the Housing Hub, David’s confidence soared as he took the first steps toward living independently.
Today, we congratulate David on moving out of the aged care facility and into supported independent accommodation. His journey to strengthen his self-belief, mental resilience, and physical health has been remarkable.
David shares, “This would not have been possible without my support workers. They have believed in me and have been there for me every step of the way. My support workers have all been easy to talk to and great to spend time with. They have helped me rebuild my life and find a great place to live.”
Daniel, our Service Experience Manager, reflects, “I chose to work in this industry to assist people in making real changes in their lives. I’m grateful to be part of a fantastic team that has worked together to support David in building his confidence and life skills. Seeing David achieve such an important goal he has aimed for over the years has been incredible.”
