4 Easy Tips and Tricks for Older Adults
As we age, some everyday tasks can become more challenging. But here at Simply Helping, we think life should be as easy as possible, especially for older adults ageing at home. So, we’ve put together a few tips and tricks for older adults to make everyday life that little bit easier.
1. Increase Your Grip
Do you find it difficult to grip certain objects? Here’s a trick for you. Place a few thick rubber bands over shiny or smooth items, like drinking glasses, to instantly improve your grip. And if you have trouble opening jars, pop a rubber band over the lid to make it easier to turn.
For thin, small objects like toothbrushes or cutlery, foam pencil grips work well. Simply place the grip over the handle of the object, and you should find it easier to grab.
2. Easy Access
A lazy Susan (a spinning, round tray) is a great way to make the most of awkward storage areas, like deep, corner kitchen cabinets. But did you know—you can use a lazy Susan almost anywhere? Install a lazy Susan in your fridge, bathroom cabinet, under the kitchen sink, (or anywhere!). This way, it’ll be easy to see and reach everything in each space, without bending, stretching, or fussing.
3. Make it Colourful
Colour-code frequently-used items to make them easy to recognise. For example, paint the top of each key on your keyring a different colour (nail polish works great). So next time you go to unlock your front door, you’ll know which key is which, instantly. Use coloured stickers for switches, buttons on your TV remote, or to colour-code charging cables.
4. Take Plenty of Pictures
Have you ever forgotten where you parked? Or left to buy groceries only to forget what you need? If you have a smartphone, try taking a picture of your parking space, or the inside of your fridge before you leave. This way, you can refer back to the photo on your phone to help jog your memory.
