Simply Helping Tram to Find Strength Through Support

For NDIS participant Tram, support from Simply Helping Central and Northern Melbourne has helped her build confidence and reconnect with her community. Having people around her who she knows and trusts has been an important part of that journey.

Originally from Vietnam, Tram moved to Australia at the age of 18. Arriving in a new country without speaking English was challenging, but Tram approached her new life with determination and resilience. She worked hard to learn the language and spent seven years teaching young Vietnamese children to develop their English skills.

In her early twenties, Tram was diagnosed with schizophrenia and began experiencing significant mental health challenges. As a result, she was no longer able to continue working. During this period, Tram relied heavily on the support of her family. While grateful for their care, she found her world becoming increasingly isolated, making it difficult to maintain social connections and engage with her community.

Since commencing NDIS supports with Simply Helping Central and Northern Melbourne in 2021, Tram has been supported by a team of trusted support workers, with Shane being her primary support person who has remained by her side from the beginning. Together, they have built a strong and trusting relationship that has helped Tram regain confidence and participate more fully in the community.

A key part of Shane’s support has been ensuring that Tram can stay connected to what matters most to her, including her Buddhist faith. Through culturally aware and person-centred support, Shane accompanies and encourages Tram to visit her local temple, where she participates in chanting, meditation, and other spiritual activities. These experiences have helped Tram maintain important cultural and community connections while providing a safe environment where she feels understood and respected.

Shane has also provided invaluable support during some of Tram’s most difficult moments, including medical appointments and hospital stays.

“It’s hard to have a long stay at the hospital on your own,” Tram shares. “Shane’s support has been more than what I would get from a good friend. Having someone I know come and visit me and stay with me at hospital makes me feel better”.

Beyond emotional support, Shane has assisted Tram to maintain her independence and pursue employment opportunities. Whether supporting her to attend work during difficult periods or assisting with transport challenges, Shane’s reliability and encouragement have been instrumental in helping Tram achieve her goals.

For Tram, feeling comfortable and safe with her support team is important to her. “They have helped me and provided me with reassurance. There is no pressure to speak or explain, and I’m not judged,” she says. “When I call the Simply Helping office, I know they are trustworthy and supportive. They listen to me and understand me.”

Tram’s story is a wonderful example of the difference that consistent, culturally responsive support can make. Through her determination and the trusted partnership she has built with Shane, Tram continues to build her confidence and stay connected to the people and activities that matter to her. We are proud to be part of Tram’s journey.
