Simply Helping Glenn Transform His Life
Glenn, a proud First Nations man, has made significant progress in transforming his life, and he’s only just getting started. With support from Simply Helping support worker Rachael and assistance through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Glenn, a person with disability, has overcome many challenges and continues to build independence and confidence each day.
When Glenn first contacted Simply Helping Central and Northern Melbourne, he was facing several barriers. He had been out of the workforce for over ten years and had developed a cannabis addiction. After losing his home in a fire, Glenn also found himself without a stable place to live. Isolated and unsure where to turn, Glenn remembers feeling stuck. “I didn’t know where to go or who to turn to for support,” he recalls.
Glenn says one of the most critical steps in his journey was being matched with the right support worker. That’s when he met Rachael. “Rachael understands me,” Glenn says. “She stepped in, helped me get organised, and encouraged me in the right way. Without her, I wouldn’t have known where to start. A good support worker is non-judgemental, understanding, and patient, and Rachael is all of that. She helps me become more independent.”
Through his own determination and with consistent support from Rachael and the NDIS, Glenn has achieved several NDIS goals and is working towards new ones. “I’ve kicked a long-term drug addiction,” he shares proudly. “I feel like my life is more sorted out. I feel better about myself.”
Glenn’s progress has been remarkable to witness. He now has secure accommodation and has reconnected with his mother and family in a meaningful way. With a stable foundation in place, Glenn is exploring new activities, including volunteering, and, of course, cheering on his beloved St Kilda football team.
For Glenn, Simply Helping has become more than just a service; it’s part of his community. It’s a place where he feels known, supported, and encouraged to thrive. His journey highlights what’s possible when the right support arrives at the right time, and when someone believes in you.
