3 Unusual And Effective Kitchen Cleaning Tips

Sometimes conventional just doesn’t cut it. Here are three unusual but effective kitchen cleaning tips, to keep the heart of your home fresh, sparkling, and organised.

1. The Super Spud

The humble potato—a tasty snack and the perfect side dish to any hearty meal. But did you know that the humble potato isn’t just a tasty snack… it’s also a great cleaning tool? Potatoes contain oxalic acid, which naturally breaks down rust.

Slice a potato in half and dip it in vinegar, baking soda, or dishwashing liquid. Then take a rusty pan (this works perfectly for cast-iron) and scrub the rust (and your worries) away. This hack also works well for tarnished silverware, or anything metal, really.

2. Bag it Up!

Most plastic kitchen products should go on the top rack of the dishwasher. And if you have an older model dishwasher, this means they can’t go in the cutlery basket. So, how often do you open up your dishwasher and find your plastic utensils strewn about inside? I’d say the answer is: pretty often. Well, here’s something that will keep unruly plastic utensils in their place—garment wash bags.

Usually reserved for delicate laundry items, garment wash bags actually work in the dishwasher, too. Pop all of your loose plastic items in the bag and place them on the top rack of your dishwasher. Ta-da! No more wandering utensils.

3. Easy-Clean Oven

Steam is a great cleaning tool. Perfect for garments, carpets, and hardwood floors. But did you know it’s possible to steam clean your oven? Place an oven-safe bowl with half a lemon and some water inside your oven. Set your oven at 200 degrees Celsius and bake for around 30 minutes (or until the water has been boiling for a while). The steam from the bowl will have loosened all the baked-on dirt. Now (once the oven has cooled enough so it’s safe to the touch), take a damp sponge and wipe the dirt away. Too easy. And by the way, this hack works for microwaves too!
