From Experience to Care: Simply Helping Comes to
Northern Tasmania
At Simply Helping Northern Tasmania, care is shaped around the person, not a standardised process. For owner Nouman Asghar, that approach is deeply personal and grounded in experience.
Nouman shares how his experience as a support worker influences the way Simply Helping Northern Tasmania provides reliable, consistent support to people in the local community.
“I started out as a volunteer in aged care,” Nouman said. “I only did it for a short time, and at first I wasn’t able to fully comprehend the complexity involved in this sector.”
“My journey into care began with a genuine interest in helping people and being there for others when they needed support the most,” Nouman continued. “Seeing how meaningful even small acts of care could be, really motivated me to go down this path further.”
Over time, Nouman found himself drawn to roles where he could make a positive difference. He saw how ongoing support can improve quality of life, not only through practical help, but also through being a steady presence.
During his time volunteering, Nouman met an older person who was initially hesitant to accept support. That experience really stayed with him and shaped how he delivers care today.
“They valued their independence deeply and were worried that receiving support would mean losing control over their daily life,” he said. “At first, they were quite reserved, and it took time to build trust.”
“Instead of rushing the process, I focused on listening and respecting their boundaries, making sure they were involved in decisions about their care,” Nouman explained. “Gradually, they became more relaxed and confident.”
From this, and other experiences in the sector, Nouman began to reflect on what good support should look like, and how he could contribute to it.
“It felt really good at the end of the day knowing I had helped put smiles on people’s faces,” Nouman said. “But I also noticed the system is not always elderly-friendly, and more needs to be done to better assist older people in our local community.”
“Then, as my mum was getting older, I started looking for support for her,” he said. “That’s when I realised how important it is to find the right person.”
Nouman’s decision to establish Simply Helping in Northern Tasmania came from wanting to get to know local people, understand what is important to them, and support them in ways that make day-to-day life easier.
“I’m also really looking forward to seeing the positive impact that consistent, compassionate support can have on people’s lives.”
Nouman wants people to feel comfortable with who is coming into their home, and confident in the support they receive. He places a strong emphasis on dignity and independence, with support provided at the right level.
“At Simply Helping Northern Tasmania, it’s about listening,” Nouman said. “It’s about involving people in decisions about their support, and encouraging independence wherever possible.”
